This blog is dedicated to telling the stories of my maternal ancestors, the Means and Getchell families. The Means family migrated from Scotland in the 1600s, descendents of the Menzies clan, onward to Ireland, and eventually settled in Downeast Maine. The Getchell family is traced to the “Original Ten” who settled Machias Maine, the first white child born there, the site of the first naval battle of the Revolutionary War. There is less information about my paternal ancestors, the Rier and Keegan families. But, I will present photos and stories about recent generations and do more research. I have heard these stories all my life, possess their photos and letters. It is time to hand them down. Storytelling is integral to the traditions of family and community yet we have little opportunity to tell them by the fireplace. I shall tell them here.
