My Mom, Louise Johnson Rier, graduated from Machias High School in 1936. This photo was taken at her class reunion in 1986. I love seeing my Mom with her high school classmates, smiling, with so many familiar faces. Elizabeth Johnson was Mom’s cousin, who was dearly loved and owned Johnson’s Jewelry in downtown Machias for many years.

I don’t know the exact size of Mom’s class but those who are able to come to a 50 year reunion would be a small percentage of the graduating class. Most in this photo lived in the area. Having said that, Machias High School has always been a small school – and getting smaller. Many students leave the area for further education and to find work.

Yeah, I quit going to reunions after the 30 year mark. I agree that by the 50th some have passed and others don’t want to travel, so it ends up being the locals.
